The government has formed a four-member commission to investigate the assets of political leaders and high-level government officials accumulated over the past two decades, from 2062/63 BS to 2082/83 BS.
A Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday decided to constitute the commission under the coordination of former Supreme Court judge Rajendra Kumar Bhandari. The panel will collect property details of public officials, including political leaders and bureaucrats, and carry out investigations accordingly.
The commission members include former judges Chandiraj Dhakal and Purushottam Parajuli, former Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Ganesh KC, and chartered accountant Prakash Lamsal.
Earlier, on March 27, the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah had decided to form such a probe panel within two weeks. The initiative was also incorporated in point 43 of the government’s 100-point governance reform plan.
The reform agenda states that a high-level commission would be formed under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to curb corruption and end impunity by investigating the property of high-ranking public officials.
According to the government, the investigation will be carried out based on legal criteria and evidence, and its recommendations will be forwarded to the concerned authorities for implementation.
