Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Balendra Shah has been appointed the 43rd Prime Minister of Nepal.
President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Shah as the Head of Government in accordance with Article 76(1) of the Constitution, as the leader of the majority parliamentary party. Shah was sworn in as Prime Minister at a special ceremony held at the Office of the President later in the day.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, outgoing Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal, former prime ministers, heads of constitutional bodies, senior government officials, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic community.
In a first for the country, the ceremony incorporated Vedic-Sanatan traditions. The event featured the blowing of seven conch shells, recitation of mantras by 108 batuks for peace and well-being, and auspicious chants led by 108 Buddhist monks.
Shah, who was unanimously elected as the RSP parliamentary party leader, was elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa Constituency No. 5 in the March 5 elections. He defeated CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli by a wide margin.
Born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu, Shah is the son of Ayurvedic physician Dr. Ram Narayan Shah and Dhruvadevi Shah. His ancestral home is in Ekadara, Mahottari.
An Engineer by profession, Shah holds an MTech in Structural Engineering from India and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Purbanchal University. He also gained popularity as a rap artist, with his works often addressing corruption, governance, and social issues.
Shah was elected Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City in 2022 and resigned from the post on January 18, 2026, to contest the parliamentary elections.
During his tenure as mayor, he focused on urban governance reforms, infrastructure improvement, heritage conservation, and service delivery enhancement. He also led efforts to remove illegal structures and improve urban management in the capital.
With experience in infrastructure design and construction, Shah has consistently emphasized heritage preservation, structural safety, tourism-led economic development, and the promotion of traditional Newa architecture.
Having supported the Gen Z movement of September 8–9, 2025, Shah now faces the challenge of addressing the aspirations of a new generation seeking good governance, transparency, and reform.
