Grants and technical support provided under the National Agricultural Modernisation Programme (NAMP) have significantly encouraged farmers in Bhojpur district to adopt commercial farming, leading to increased production and improved livelihoods.
The programme, implemented through the Programme Implementation Unit, Sankhuwasabha, has expanded commercial cultivation of high-value crops such as cardamom, oranges, and vegetables by providing subsidies, technical assistance, and agricultural infrastructure support.
Under the Cardamom Super Zone Programme, 35 wards across seven of Bhojpur's nine local levels have been brought under commercial cardamom cultivation. Likewise, the Orange Zone Programme now covers 26 wards in five local levels.
According to the Zone Technical Unit, Bhojpur, a total of 109 farmers have received grants under various schemes in the current fiscal year, alongside technical assistance aimed at improving productivity and promoting sustainable farming practices.
Among the beneficiaries is Sangeeta Shrestha of Bhojpur Municipality-5, who launched commercial vegetable and chilli farming after receiving a grant of Rs 400,000 under the Agriculture and Livestock Entrepreneurship Development Programme. Four other agricultural enterprises have also received grants of the same amount.
Similarly, Hari Prasad Pradhan of Gupteshwor, Bhojpur Municipality-3, said government assistance had inspired him to expand his farming activities. With grant support, he constructed a cement-lined irrigation pond and extended orange cultivation to 20 ropanis of land.
Following an inter-agency monitoring visit, Bhojpur Municipality Mayor Kailash Kumar Ale said the programme has been implemented effectively and is delivering tangible benefits to farmers.
Acting Chief of the District Coordination Committee, Anisha Khadka, said the agricultural modernisation initiatives have substantially improved farmers' livelihoods by creating income-generating opportunities and promoting commercial agriculture.
During the current fiscal year, the programme has provided irrigation infrastructure grants to 54 farmers, while 30 improved cardamom drying kilns have been installed to enhance post-harvest processing.
In addition, 11 agricultural enterprises have received financial assistance under the Orange Area Expansion Programme.
The programme also supports a range of activities, including strengthening orange nurseries, establishing cardamom nursery resource centres, developing model orange orchards, cardamom canopy management, agricultural mechanisation, food nutrient support, processing and marketing of indigenous crops, and livestock entrepreneurship development.
Under the indigenous crop promotion initiative, millet biscuits are now being produced commercially in Ramprasad Rai Rural Municipality-6, creating new market opportunities for local farmers.
Officials said 55,000 cardamom seedlings were planted across 102 ropanis of land this fiscal year through the cluster-based (Chaklabandi) farming programme, further expanding commercial cardamom cultivation in the district.
Authorities believe the combined impact of these initiatives has contributed significantly to increased agricultural production while encouraging more farmers to shift from subsistence farming to commercially viable agriculture.
