A groundwater irrigation system introduced by the Madhesh Province government has proven effective in increasing agricultural productivity in the districts of Dhanusha and Mahottari.
The irrigation facilities, installed to support farmers in areas lacking canal-based irrigation, have brought significant relief to local farmers who previously relied mainly on rainfall.
Ramesh Sah, a farmer from Bardibas Municipality–2 in Mahottari, said the technology has been a boon for farmers in regions without irrigation canals supplied by river water. “With the installation of the groundwater irrigation system, we are no longer solely dependent on rainwater,” he said. Sah added that the technology has made irrigation for farming easier and has also improved access to water for daily household use.
Deep tube wells and power drills have been installed in rural areas with the support of the Water Resources and Groundwater Irrigation Development Division Office. According to the office, a single deep tube well can irrigate up to 40 bighas of land.
Engineer Amalesh Yadav of the office said that 35 deep tube wells have so far been installed across Mahottari and Dhanusha, irrigating approximately 1,400 bighas of arable land. The construction and operation of each deep tube well cost more than Rs 10 million.
Yadav also informed that 50 power drills have been constructed and are currently operating in the two districts. An additional 81 power drills have been in the process of installation since the last fiscal year.
“Nine bighas of land can be irrigated using a single power drill. The construction and operation of one power drill cost around Rs 1.6 million,” said Yadav. He added that the 50 power drills constructed so far (at a total cost of around Rs 12.96 million) have irrigated about 450 bighas of land.
According to Nayan Pokharel, chief of the office, deep tube wells and power drills together are currently irrigating around 1,850 bighas of land in the two districts. He said the office was established in 2041 BS to expand groundwater irrigation facilities in the region.
