Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has urged representatives of the Gen Z movement to institutionalize the demands they raised during the recent demonstrations, saying the movement represents a historic turning point in Nepal’s political discourse.
Speaking at a political dialogue between the Nepal Socialist Party (Naya Shakti) and Gen Z representatives on Wednesday, Dr Bhattarai - the founding chairperson of the party - said the movement reflected the “collective voice of a new generation,” which now needs to be translated into structured and lasting reforms.
“It is imperative to formally sign an agreement with the government to make this transformative movement historic,” Dr Bhattarai remarked. “If it is not institutionalized, it risks losing its aura and importance.”
During the dialogue, he responded to several inquiries from Gen Z leaders, acknowledging that Nepal’s current constitution has shortcomings, as his party had limited influence during its drafting process. “Now it is up to the Gen Z generation to complete and perfect this constitution,” he said, calling on youth activists to channel their energy toward constructive political engagement.
Party coordinator Durga Sob also addressed the event, emphasizing that the Nepal Socialist Party has long engaged with social justice and inclusion issues. She said the party stands ready to support the transformative direction set by the Gen Z movement and to function as an alternative political force promoting reform and accountability.
Gen Z leaders, including Santen Rai, Prabhat Labh, Arnav Chaudhary, Bikas Rasaili, Amit Khanal Urja, Pradip Pandey, and Majid Ansar, presented their views on the recent protest and the evolving political developments in the country.
