Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Centre) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been elected as the Coordinator of the newly unified Nepali Communist Party, which was formed following the merger of 10 left-oriented political parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist).
The unification national conference, held in Kathmandu on Wednesday, also elected Madhav Kumar Nepal as the Joint-Coordinator of the party.
Mahindra Raya Yadav, a member of the presidium, proposed Dahal and Nepal for the leadership positions, and the conference endorsed the proposal unanimously.
Addressing the event, senior communist leaders Bamdev Gautam, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, and Pampha Bhusal expressed confidence that the formation of the new party would help advance the agenda of social transformation and national unity.
However, General Secretary of the former CPN (Unified Socialist), Ghanashyam Bhusal, along with Ram Kumari Jhankri and several other leaders, refused to join the unification, citing disagreements over the party’s direction and leadership process.
