Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has said that the recent joint meeting among Gen Z representatives, political parties, and the government has been fruitful in advancing preparations for the upcoming March 5 election.
Speaking to the media after the four-hour-long meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Minister Kharel, who also serves as the government spokesperson, said the discussion took place in a harmonious and constructive atmosphere under the leadership of Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
“The three-sided meeting was encouraging and will play an instrumental role in moving forward with the election preparations,” Minister Kharel said. He added that the discussions focused on addressing Gen Z’s demands and ensuring the smooth implementation of the election mandate given to the interim government.
It was the first formal dialogue between the political parties and Gen Z leaders since the September 8–9 protests, which led to the fall of the coalition government, dissolution of the House of Representatives, and formation of the interim government.
Prime Minister Karki took a special initiative to bring together political and youth representatives to discuss the nation’s political course and youth concerns jointly. Responding to media questions about the stance of political parties, Minister Kharel said, “Almost all major political parties support the election process. The Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have agreed to cooperate with the government. Even the CPN-UML clarified it is not against the election.”
He added that the Nepali Congress raised concerns about security arrangements, while the CPN-UML questioned whether the government could ensure a safe environment for the polls. During the meeting, Gen Z leaders emphasized the importance of good governance, transparency, and the eradication of corruption, while also reaffirming their commitment to participating in the electoral process.
“Now, the atmosphere for the election has been created. The government requests cooperation from all sides,” Minister Kharel stated, adding that the administration is also working to recover looted arms to strengthen security before the polls. Prime Minister Karki, addressing the meeting, called on both political and Gen Z leaders to contribute actively to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election. She reiterated the government’s commitment to good governance and timely elections.
Alongside the Prime Minister, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Education Minister Dr. Mahabir Pun, and Minister Kharel represented the government.
Leaders present at the meeting included Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Barshaman Pun, Madhav Sapkota, Prakash Adhikari, Deepak Karki, Prakash Jwala, Rajendra Pandey, Mohan Shrestha, Rajendra Gurung, Nisha Dangi, Swarnim Wagle, Mahesh Bartaula, Kshitij Thebe, Basant Kushwaha, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Miraj Dhungana, Bibek Dahal, James Karki, Ameet Khanal, and Rajan Ranamagar, representing various political parties.
