The government has decided to abolish the use of blue number plates on vehicles used by honorary consuls representing foreign governments in Nepal.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision was made in line with international law on honorary consulates, the principle of reciprocity, and the Regulation on Honorary Consul, 2039 BS, as well as in keeping with existing practices.
Out of 67 consulates general operating in Nepal, 50 honorary consuls had been using vehicles with blue number plates. The Ministry stated that the move also responds to growing complaints about the misuse of such vehicles.
Following the decision, vehicles currently bearing blue number plates will be converted to private vehicle registration, with the Foreign Ministry coordinating with the concerned agencies for implementation.
The Ministry clarified, however, that other privileges and rights of honorary consuls will remain unchanged.
