A delegation led by Kyoko Yokosuka, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for Nepal, called on Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising today.
During the meeting held at the Ministry of Urban Development in Singha Durbar, discussions were held on UNDP’s support for the upcoming elections, its ongoing assistance in the energy, climate change, and development sectors, and the progress of various ongoing projects.
Minister Ghising informed that the government is preparing to enable Nepali citizens temporarily residing abroad to vote, and requested UNDP’s support in adopting online voting technologies successfully used in other countries, according to his secretariat.
He also sought UNDP’s assistance in key areas, including mitigating the impacts of climate change, creating employment through small and medium-sized industries in rural areas, studying vulnerable glacial lakes, establishing a disaster early warning system, and enhancing disaster preparedness.
Furthermore, Minister Ghising emphasized the government’s plans to replace fossil fuel-powered vehicles and traditional household energy sources with electric alternatives, promote electric energy use in energy-intensive industries, and reduce carbon emissions by substituting coal used in brick kilns with electric energy.
According to the Minister’s secretariat, UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to provide assistance for the upcoming elections and expressed readiness to help mobilize financial resources from the Climate Fund to support Nepal’s climate resilience and sustainable development initiatives.
