Prime Minister Sushila Karki held discussions with Election Commission (EC) officials on Tuesday regarding preparations for the House of Representatives election scheduled for May 5, 2026.
The meeting, held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar, focused on the cooperation required from the government and political parties to effectively implement the recently published election calendar. The EC had announced the election schedule on Monday.
Attending the meeting were Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Kumar Sinha, and Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.
It may be recalled that the interim government, led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, was formed on September 12 following the Gen Z protests of September 8-9, after which the House of Representatives was dissolved and fresh elections were announced for next May.
During the meeting, EC officials reaffirmed their commitment to conducting the elections in a free, fair, and impartial manner, while urging the government to ensure the necessary logistical and financial support for the process.
