The Election Commission (EC) has approved the official schedule for the election of members to the House of Representatives, which will be held on March 5, 2026.
According to the EC, the registration of political parties for election purposes will take place from November 17 to 26.
In a press release issued on Sunday, Commission Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that the Office of the Election Officer for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) election system will be established on January 16, 2026.
The election campaigning period will begin on February 15 and continue until March 2, after which all forms of campaigning will be prohibited. Voting will be held on March 5 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and vote counting will commence after the ballot boxes for both electoral systems are collected.
Similarly, the Office of the Election Officer for the proportional representation system will be set up on December 1, 2025, while the submission of closed lists of proportional candidates is scheduled for January 2 and 3, 2026.
The Commission stated that it will conduct regular consultations and discussions with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure coordination and cooperation throughout the election process.
The EC also reminded that, as per legal provisions, only parties registered with the Commission are eligible to register for election purposes. Therefore, any political party wishing to participate must obtain a party registration certificate by November 16.
