Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called on all political parties, civil society, the media, and the public to cooperate in making the upcoming March 5 election free, fair, and peaceful.
In a televised address to the nation on Thursday evening, PM Karki urged all Nepalis to actively participate in the election to the House of Representatives and elect capable representatives who can fulfill the youths’ aspirations for change. “A peaceful atmosphere is essential for a successful election,” she emphasized, appealing to citizens across the country to remain patient and help maintain calm.
The prime minister also revealed that discussions are underway with the Election Commission on the feasibility of allowing overseas voting, given the large number of Nepalis working abroad. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of Nepali migrant workers and addressing issues raised by Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs).
PM Karki noted that the voting law has been amended to ensure that 18-year-old Gen Z youths can exercise their franchise. She highlighted that the government has provided financial assistance to the families of those who lost their lives during the recent Gen-Z protests, declaring the deceased as martyrs. Injured protesters have received free treatment and medicine, and the government has pledged to bring those responsible for the killings to justice.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property during the protests, PM Karki paid tribute to the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
