Sushila Karki, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Nepal, has made history as the country’s first female to assume the post.
Karki, who also holds the distinction of being Nepal’s first female Chief Justice, is widely recognized for her clarity of thought, firm stance, and integrity during her judicial career.
She was appointed Prime Minister by President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday under extraordinary political circumstances, following strong pressure from the recent Gen Z demonstrations. Major political parties and other key stakeholders backed her nomination.
Born on June 7, 1952, in Shankharpur-3 of Biratnagar, Morang, Karki completed her Bachelor’s degree at Mahendra Morang College, Biratnagar. She earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University in 1975 and later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Tribhuvan University. She began her legal career as an advocate on March 29, 1979.
From 1985, Karki spent three years teaching at Mahendra Multiple Campus, Morang. She also served as President of the Nepal Bar Association (NBA), Koshi Zone, for three years from 1988, and later as President of the NBA at the Biratnagar Appellate Court.
Karki was awarded the title of Senior Advocate on December 20, 2004. She was appointed as a temporary judge of the Supreme Court on January 22, 2009, and became a permanent judge on November 18, 2010. She went on to serve as Chief Justice of Nepal from July 11, 2016, to June 6, 2017.
Her international exposure includes visits to the United States, the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, India, Tanzania, and the Netherlands. Fluent in Nepali, English, and Hindi, Karki is known for her bold yet modest personality.
