President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday administered the oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki at a special ceremony held at the Office of the President, Sheetal Niwas.
The Karki-led interim government has been mandated to conduct the upcoming general elections within six months. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, foreign ambassadors to Nepal, Karki’s spouse Durga Prasad Subedi, former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Chief Secretary Eaknarayan Aryal, and other high-level government officials.
Karki has set a milestone in Nepal’s political history by becoming the country’s first woman Prime Minister. She had earlier made history as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, serving from July 11, 2016, to June 9, 2017. Known for her bold and assertive stance, she has long been an outspoken advocate for good governance.
Her appointment comes at a time of political unrest, largely fueled by the younger generation. The Gen Z movement, which strongly supported her candidacy, is seen as a driving force behind the leadership change.
Observers expect her leadership to help address Gen Z’s demands, promote good governance, and provide a way out of the present political crisis.
