Eminent poet and literary figure Dr. Nava Raj Lamsal officially released his fourth epic, ‘Kalpa’, at a ceremony held in the capital today.
The event was organized by Shikha Books, where the epic was jointly launched by Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, lawmakers Bidhya Bhattarai, Sudan Kirati, Manish Jha, and literary journalist Raj Kumar Baniya.
Speaking at the event, General Secretary Thapa remarked that ‘Kalpa’ exemplifies how Dr. Lamsal's creative competition lies within himself. He noted that the epic explores multi-dimensional themes such as history, religion, culture, and humanity, making it a profound literary contribution.
Thapa also expressed his commitment to facilitate discussions and literary debates on ‘Kalpa’ at the library established within the NC central office. He emphasized that the epic reflects deep interrelations between people, nature, and culture.
“Kalpa is one of the six Vedangas (branches of the Veda),” Thapa explained, adding that the work effectively portrays the irony of modern education, where students are burdened with books yet deprived of true knowledge. He further expressed confidence that the epic would serve as an inspiration for societal reform, particularly at a time when social ideals and originality are in decline.
Lawmaker Sudan Kirati urged Dr. Lamsal to consider writing an epic centered on indigenous cultures such as those of the Chepang, Bankariya, and Raute communities.
Lawmaker Manish Jha highlighted that the release of the epic carries a strong cultural message, especially during an era when greed is contributing to the destruction of both culture and nature. He also called for a broader discussion on whether true freedom of thought exists, particularly when discourse around freedom of expression is gaining attention.
Jha further noted that Kalpa brings noble and fresh perspectives, offering in-depth reflections on the nation, religion, and cultural heritage.
Expressing his joy during the launch, Dr. Lamsal shared that he felt a deep sense of exaltation at seeing his fourth epic come to life. He has previously authored three epics: Karna, Dhara, and Agni. Notably, Agni was honored with the prestigious Madan Puraskar.
