The 117th birth anniversary of Nepal’s legendary poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, revered as the Mahakavi (Great Poet), was celebrated today with a special literary programme organized by Modern Kanya Multiple College, Kathmandu.
Speakers at the event highlighted Devkota’s immense contributions to Nepali and world literature, describing him as an extraordinary literary genius whose works continue to inspire generations.
“Devkota’s creations reflect profound humanism, love for nature, and a revolutionary spirit. His writings have not only enriched Nepali literature but also elevated it to global recognition,” said senior litterateur Rochak Ghimire, the chief guest of the ceremony.
Prominent literary figures including Dr Ram Prasad Dahal, Dinesh Raj Panta, and Ramesh Mohan Bhattarai discussed various dimensions of Devkota’s literary legacy-his poetry, essays, epics, and critical works.
Students of the college recited some of the Mahakavi’s celebrated poems such as Pagal and Muna Madan, captivating the audience with his timeless verses.
Born on the day of Laxmi Puja in 1966 BS at Dillibazar, Kathmandu, Devkota began writing poetry at the age of ten. He is credited with promoting Nepali language and literature globally, through his translations and representation of Nepal in international literary forums.
In 1997 BS, Devkota published Prasiddha Prabandha Sangraha (Collection of Well-Known Essays), featuring works of fifteen renowned English prose writers, including Francis Bacon and Charles Lamb.
