The World Bank has approved financial support for Nepal’s Clean Air and Prosperity Project aimed at reducing industrial air pollution and strengthening air quality management systems in the country.
The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a Rs 7.7 billion credit for the project, which seeks to reduce emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), particularly from industrial and commercial boilers and furnaces.
The project is expected to support Nepal in improving air quality management while encouraging industries to adopt cleaner and more efficient technologies.
“Air pollution is not only a public health crisis but also a significant economic burden in Nepal, costing the country more than six percent of GDP each year through health costs and lost labour productivity,” said David Sislen, Division Director for the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka at the World Bank.
He said the project aims to protect millions of people from harmful pollution by helping Nepali enterprises shift to cleaner technologies that reduce emissions while lowering operating costs, improving competitiveness, and supporting sustainable industrial growth.
