Exports of Chhurpi, a type of hard cheese made primarily from yak milk, through the Mechi Customs Office in Kakarbhitta, Jhapa, have increased during the first five months of the current fiscal year (2025/26).
According to Information Officer Ishwor Kumar Humagain, a total of 275,246 kilograms of Chhurpi worth Rs 485.2 million were exported from mid-July to mid-December. This marks a 32 percent increase in volume compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
During the corresponding period last year, 217,068 kilograms of Chhurpi valued at Rs 367.6 million were exported. The export value has thus increased by Rs 117.6 million.
Kakarbhitta remains the primary export point for domestically produced Chhurpi. Among the top ten export items from this customs point, Chhurpi ranks fourth.
Chhurpi is produced mainly in Nepal’s hilly and mountainous districts. Most of it is exported to Europe and the United States, where it is commonly used as pet food for dogs and cats.
General Secretary of the Nepal Chhurpi Producers Association, Rishi Timsina, said that Koshi Province alone accounts for about 80 percent of the country’s total Chhurpi production.
He also pointed out that despite Chhurpi being one of Nepal’s major export products, the government has not given sufficient attention to its production and trade promotion.
