Government Invests Over Rs 930 Billion in Public Entities

Sunday, 07 December 2025

The government has invested Rs 930.88 billion in the form of shares and loans in 159 public corporations and bodies up to the fiscal year 2024/25.

According to the Annual Report on Share and Loan Investment of the Government of Nepal, released by the Public Debt Management Office, the government has invested Rs 404.81 billion as share capital in 116 corporations up to fiscal year 2024/25.

The Nepal Electricity Authority, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Nepal Telecom, Rastriya Banijya Bank, and Agricultural Development Bank are the entities with the highest share investments.

Similarly, the government has invested a total of Rs 526.6 billion in loans up to the last fiscal year. Of this amount, Rs 158.18 billion was invested from internal sources, while Rs 367.88 billion came from external sources, according to the Office.

Entities receiving the highest loan investments include the Nepal Electricity Authority, Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), and Nepal Water Supply Corporation.

The report states that the government received Rs 2 billion 622 million 994 thousand and 695 as principal repayment and Rs 5 billion 290 million 430 thousand and 365 as interest recovery during the period.

In the last fiscal year alone, total investment amounted to Rs 41 billion 480 million 422 thousand and 247, including Rs 5 billion 526 million 334 thousand and 549 in shares and Rs 35 billion 959 million 787 thousand and 698 in loans.

Despite significant government investment in various corporations and public entities, returns remain weak. Entities with loan and share investments have gradually increased their liabilities, largely due to their failure to pay interest to the government on time.

The report states: “As of fiscal year 2024/25, the overdue principal amount stands at Rs 259 billion 199 million 703 thousand and 126, while overdue interest amounts to Rs 140 billion 882 million 396 thousand and 169, bringing the total overdue amount to Rs 400 billion 82 million 99 thousand and 295.”

Large overdue deposits with high interest are concentrated in public corporations such as the Nepal Electricity Authority, Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board, Nepal Water Supply Corporation, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.
