The government and agitating nurses have reached an agreement to end the ongoing protest after the authorities agreed to ensure a minimum monthly salary of Rs 34,730 for nurses working in private medical institutions.
The agreement was signed on Saturday following talks held at the Ministry of Health and Population between ministry officials and representatives of the nurses.
According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, the nurses will withdraw their protest programmes starting Sunday after the government addresses their key demands.
As per the deal, private medical colleges and large private hospitals will pay nurses a minimum of Rs 34,730 per month-equivalent to the salary of a fifth-level government employee-beginning from the month of Kartik.
Similarly, private hospitals that are currently unable to pay the full scale must pay at least 80 percent of the government salary rate for now, and adjust to the full amount within a month after the hospital classification process is completed.
Dr. Budhathoki added that a task force will conduct a study on the issue and submit a report with recommendations within a month. Following the report, all remaining hospitals will also be required to match government-level pay standards.
Minister for Health Dr. Sudha Sharma Gautam, Health Secretary Dr. Bikas Devkota, Spokesperson Dr. Budhathoki, and representatives of the Nursing Association of Nepal and private medical colleges were present during the discussions.
