China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday said that a “multipolar world is coming”, in what appeared to be a veiled criticism of Washington ahead of the much-anticipated talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week.
Wang, speaking at a forum in Beijing, called for an end to the politicization of economic and trade issues and warned against the dangers of trade wars and market fragmentation.
“Frequently withdrawing from agreements and reneging on commitments, while enthusiastically forming blocs and cliques, has subjected multilateralism to unprecedented challenges,” Wang said, without naming any specific country.
“The tide of history cannot be reversed, and a multipolar world is coming,” he added.
The remarks come as global markets closely watch Thursday’s planned meeting between Trump and Xi in South Korea, the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Trump began his second term in January.
The meeting aims to ease tensions in the ongoing U.S.–China trade dispute, which escalated after the U.S. imposed sweeping tariffs earlier this year.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng have already held two days of preliminary discussions to avoid the additional 100 percent tariffs set to take effect on November 1.
China’s Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang said that the two sides had reached a “preliminary consensus” on several key issues.
Bessent, speaking to ABC News, confirmed that the new tariffs had been “effectively averted,” and indicated progress on agreements concerning rare earth exports and American soybean sales to China.
