The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that rebuilding the devastated health system in Gaza will require at least $7 billion, following months of relentless conflict that have left hospitals in ruins and medical services on the brink of collapse.
“There are no fully functioning hospitals in Gaza, and only 14 out of 36 are operational to some extent,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Thursday. “There are critical shortages of essential medicines, equipment, and health workers,” he added.
Tedros emphasized that the humanitarian situation remains dire, with thousands of injured civilians unable to access medical care. “The total cost for rebuilding Gaza’s health system will be at least seven billion U.S. dollars,” he said, noting that comprehensive reconstruction would take years even under stable conditions.
According to the WHO, many health facilities have been destroyed or rendered nonfunctional due to severe damage, lack of fuel, and supply shortages. The organization continues to call for safe humanitarian access and increased international support to restore basic healthcare services in the region.
