WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has asked Spanish authorities to impose a 20-year prison sentence on the head of a security firm accused of spying on him on behalf of the United States.
Assange’s lawyers requested the punishment for David Morales, the owner of Undercover Global, in a statement seen by AFP on Saturday. Morales faces charges of discovery and disclosure of secrets, bribery, money laundering, and illegal possession of weapons.
Between 2015 and 2018, Morales’s company was responsible for the security of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange had taken refuge for seven years to avoid extradition.
Assange was released from a high-security British prison in June after reaching a plea deal with the US government over WikiLeaks’s publication of classified military and diplomatic documents. He had previously spent five years behind bars in Britain.
According to Spanish court findings, Morales allegedly spied on Assange and passed illegally obtained information to US authorities. The information reportedly included details about Assange’s legal team, family members, and several Latin American leaders who visited him.
The court stated that in 2017, Morales installed new surveillance cameras inside the embassy capable of recording confidential conversations. Technicians were allegedly instructed to enable a live-streaming system with two channels-one for Ecuador and another for what Morales called “friends of the United States,” referring to those seeking Assange’s extradition.
Morales, a former Spanish military officer, remains under investigation in Spain and is awaiting trial.
