Farmers in Kanchanpur are earning impressive incomes by adopting zero tillage-based garlic cultivation, a method that allows planting directly on paddy stubble without plowing the field.
After harvesting paddy, Janaklal Dagaura of Pipaladi, Shuklaphanta Municipality-3, has once again begun sowing garlic using this innovative technique. Dagaura, who has practiced zero tillage for several years, said the method is more profitable and productive than traditional farming.
“I earn around Rs 90,000 per season from garlic farming. Zero tillage saves time, reduces cost, and gives better yield,” Dagaura shared.
In Pipaladi, garlic has become a popular cash crop, with many farmers switching to zero tillage. Families typically cultivate garlic on one to five katthas of land (one kattha equals 3,645 square feet). The average yield from one kattha is around two quintals, while the market price ranges from Rs 300 to Rs 500 per kilogram, depending on the season.
According to Binay Raj Joshi, Agriculture Development Officer at the Municipality’s Agriculture Section, zero tillage farming not only reduces expenses but also helps preserve soil fertility.
“This method eliminates the need for plowing and minimizes production costs. Farmers are finding it both eco-friendly and profitable,” Joshi said.
Agricultural experts believe that the growing shift toward zero tillage garlic farming in Kanchanpur could enhance sustainable agricultural practices and increase farmers’ income in the long run.
