Google on Tuesday announced a massive $15 billion investment in India over the next five years, unveiling plans to establish its largest artificial intelligence (AI) and data center hub outside the United States.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, announced at a ceremony in New Delhi, stating that the “gigawatt-scale AI hub” will be built in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
“It is the largest AI hub that we are investing in anywhere outside of the US,” Kurian said, adding that the facility would “eventually scale to multiple gigawatts” to meet the country’s growing demand for AI solutions.
The move comes as India rapidly emerges as a major digital powerhouse, with more than 900 million internet users expected by the end of this year. Businesses and individuals across the country are increasingly adopting AI-driven tools and technologies.
India’s Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, welcomed the announcement, calling it a major boost to the nation’s AI vision. “This digital infrastructure will go a long way in meeting the goals of our India AI vision,” he said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu described the development as a “very happy day” for the state. His Technology Minister, Nara Lokesh, called it a “game-changing investment” that followed “a year of intense discussions and relentless effort.”
“It is a massive leap for our state's digital future, innovation, and global standing,” Lokesh posted on X. “This is just the beginning.”
The announcement follows a wave of AI-focused investments in India. Earlier this month, US startup Anthropic revealed plans to open an office in the country next year, following a meeting between its CEO, Dario Amodei, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi said India’s “vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation,” emphasizing the government’s goal to “harness AI for growth.”
OpenAI has also confirmed plans to launch an India office later this year, with CEO Sam Altman noting that ChatGPT usage in the country has quadrupled in the past year. Similarly, AI firm Perplexity announced a major partnership with Indian telecom giant Airtel in July, offering its 360 million customers a free one-year Perplexity Pro subscription.
