Sheep and goats worth Rs 100 million were traded in Jumla district during this year’s festive season, officials said. The total sales amount was Rs 60 million lower compared to last year’s Dashain period.
According to Bir Bahadur Rawat, Chief of the Livestock Development Section of Chandannath Municipality, major market areas, including Khalanga Bazaar, the district headquarters, recorded livestock sales equivalent to Rs 100 million during Dashain. In addition to goats and sheep, buffalo were also sold for meat in the district.
Sales of goats, sheep, buffaloes, and fowls typically surge during Dashain, as people offer animal sacrifices at goddess shrines and meat consumption rises due to the festive celebrations.
Last year, he-goats, sheep, and buffaloes worth Rs 163.2 million were traded during the festival, according to the municipality’s Livestock Development Section.
This year, a total of 5,843 sheep were traded in the district. The price per sheep ranged between Rs 9,000 and Rs 23,000, while he-goats were sold between Rs 8,000 and Rs 22,000, Rawat said.
The district received livestock supplies from neighbouring districts, including Mugu, Kalikot, Dailekh, and Bajura. Local traders reported that prices for sheep and goats dropped by nearly 30 percent compared to last year.
Livestock traders in Jumla and nearby districts primarily sell local sheep and goats, as imports of Tibetan Himalayan goats have ceased since 2068 BS. According to the Livestock Service Office, Jumla, farmers in the district currently rear around 88,000 sheep.
