The Korala checkpoint, located at an altitude of 4,610 meters above sea level, has emerged as a popular tourist destination in recent years. The number of domestic visitors to the Nepal-China border point has continued to rise annually, thanks to improved road connectivity along the national pride project - the Beni–Jomsom–Korala highway.
According to the District Police Office, Mustang, a total of 6,173 domestic tourists and 688 foreign tourists entered Mustang on October 3 and 4, despite forecasts of adverse weather conditions. The flow of visitors surged following the Dashain festival, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Tshering Kippa Lama.
Similarly, 2,217 vehicles entered Mustang during the same period. Police Inspector Bishnu Hari Thapa, in charge of the Armed Police Force (APF) Border Outpost at Nhechung, said the number of domestic tourists visiting the Korala checkpoint has increased significantly after Dashain.
“About 1,500 domestic tourists visited the Korala checkpoint daily on October 3 and 4, while 1,702 tourists reached the border point on October 5,” Thapa said. He added that a total of 126 four-wheelers and 224 two-wheelers arrived at the APF check post during this period.
Of the total domestic tourists visiting Muktinath and Mustang, around 50 percent also visit the Korala border point. Many domestic travelers visit Upper Mustang and the Korala area after offering prayers at the Muktinath Temple.
However, foreign tourists are not allowed to reach the Korala border point due to security sensitivities. Those who obtain special permits to visit the Upper Mustang area - after paying a fee of USD 500 - are restricted from crossing the APF outpost at Lomanthang-2.
Officials have reported that some tourists face health problems caused by extreme cold and high altitude. To ensure safety, authorities have implemented new regulations requiring vehicles to enter the checkpoint from 7:00 am and exit by 4:00 pm starting today.
