The Government of Nepal has expressed its appreciation and gratitude to the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for granting a pardon to 128 Nepali inmates on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it highly values the humanitarian gesture, describing it as a reflection of the cordial bilateral relations between Nepal and the UAE. “The decision to grant pardon was taken following a request made by the Government of Nepal through the Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has confirmed the release of Nepali national Amrit Jha, who had been detained in Iran amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Jha was reportedly held by the Iranian Army near the Strait of Hormuz nearly a month ago.
According to Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, Jha is currently in contact with Nepal’s Honorary Consul General in Iran and the Embassy of Nepal in Qatar. He added that diplomatic efforts are underway to facilitate Jha’s safe return to Nepal.
