The Tamang community is celebrating Sonam Lhosar, the Tamang New Year, today by organizing various cultural and social programmes across the country.
According to the Manjushree calendar, the year 2862 begins from today, marking the transition from the Year of the Snake to the Year of the Horse. Sonam Lhosar is observed annually on Magh Shukla Pratipada and holds deep cultural and religious significance for the Tamang people.
The Sonam Lhosar calendar follows a 12-year cycle, represented by animal symbols: rat, cow, tiger, rabbit, dragon (cloud), snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, and pig.
The festival is mainly celebrated in the districts of Bagmati Province, where the Tamang community has a significant population. Besides the Tamang people, communities such as Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, Lepcha, and others also observe the festival with enthusiasm.
In view of the festival, the government has declared a nationwide public holiday today.
On the occasion, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav extended his best wishes to all communities celebrating Sonam Lhosar, stating that such festivals help strengthen the core values of the republican system, including inclusion, equality, federalism, secularism,m and the rule of law.
Similarly, Chairman of the National Assembly Narayan Prasad Dahal wished for social and cultural harmony, brotherhood, and national unity among all ethnic communities. He noted that Sonam Lhosar has played an important role in preserving and promoting the traditional cultural heritage of the Tamang community.
