Nine one-horned rhinoceroses have died in Chitwan National Park (CNP) since Saun (mid-July), according to park authorities.
CNP Information Officer Avinas Thapa Magar said that five male and three female rhinos have died during the period, while the gender of one rhino could not be identified.
Among the dead rhinos, one died due to electrocution, while the remaining deaths were attributed to natural causes, Magar informed. He added that the most recent death was reported on January 6.
According to Magar, a male rhino estimated to be around 35 years old was found dead in the Kumroj Buffer Zone Community Forest. “It is estimated that the rhino died following a fight with another rhino. The horn and hooves were found intact,” he said.
Magar stated that rhino deaths occur every year due to various reasons, including natural causes, electrocution, fights among rhinos, and getting stuck in swamps.
According to the latest census, Chitwan National Park is home to 694 rhinoceroses.
