A total of 7,344 cases of violence against women (VAW) were reported to the National Women’s Commission (NWC) over the past six years through its toll-free helpline service.
According to the Commission, 88 percent of the complaints were related to domestic violence. Commission Secretary Rekha Kandel said that most survivors who reported violence were women aged 26 to 40 years.
Data from the Commission’s 1145 helpline further shows that women with lower literacy levels are more vulnerable to violence. These details were shared at an event held on Wednesday to mark the eighth anniversary of the National Women’s Commission’s 1145 Free Helpline Service.
In the last fiscal year alone, the Commission recorded 1,202 complaints of violence against women, mostly concerning domestic abuse and violations of women’s rights.
Speaking at the programme, NWC Chairperson Kamala Kumari Parajuli reiterated the Commission’s commitment to strengthening its work in the protection and promotion of women’s rights.
At the same event, Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) journalist Sharmila Pathak was honoured for her contributions to gender justice and for raising awareness on women’s issues through her reporting. Several other media professionals and Commission staff members were also recognized.
