A total of 750 trekkers stranded at the Tilicho Base Camp in Manang district have been successfully rescued following a sudden snowstorm on Sunday night.
The rescue operation was carried out by a joint team of the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force (APF), and Nepal Police, according to APF Spokesperson Shailendra Thapa. The stranded trekkers were airlifted and relocated to Khangsar in Disyang Rural Municipality–9, where arrangements are being made for their safe return, as the area also lacks adequate lodging facilities.
However, around 50 individuals are still at the base camp but are reported to be safe, Thapa added.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Mountain Rescue Training Institute of the APF rescued 45-year-old Birendra Rasaili, who fainted due to altitude sickness while descending from Tilicho Lake. Rasaili, a resident of Kathmandu Metropolitan City–31, was taken to Humde Health Post for medical treatment.
Authorities said that the establishment of the APF’s Mountain Rescue Training Institute has significantly strengthened the country’s capacity to respond swiftly to emergencies involving missing and stranded trekkers in the Himalayan region.
