Nepal has recorded a trade deficit of approximately Rs 400 billion in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2082/83 BS (2025/26), according to the Department of Customs.
As per the foreign trade statistics covering the period from July 17 to October 17, the country imported goods worth Rs 468.83 billion, while exports totaled Rs 72.78 billion. Consequently, by the end of Ashoj (October 17), the total foreign trade volume reached Rs 541.86 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of Rs 395.3 billion.
During this period, India remained Nepal’s largest trading partner. Imports from India were valued at Rs 258.88 billion, while exports stood at Rs 5.91 billion, leading to a trade deficit of Rs 199.74 billion.
Similarly, Nepal’s trade deficit with China amounted to Rs 104.7 billion, with imports worth Rs 104.89 billion and exports totaling just Rs 186.4 million.
On a positive note, Nepal registered a trade surplus with Denmark, importing goods worth Rs 400.1 million while exporting Rs 289.9 million, resulting in a surplus of Rs 249.83 million. The country also recorded modest surpluses with Germany, Romania, Sweden, and Lebanon.
Petroleum products continued to dominate imports. In the three months, Nepal imported petrol worth Rs 16.78 billion, diesel worth Rs 20.69 billion, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) worth Rs 13.98 billion, according to the Customs Department.
