While most parts of the country were immersed in the celebrations of the Tihar festival, schools in Upper Dolpa conducted their annual examinations as scheduled.
According to local authorities, the Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality in upper Dolpa held the final exams in line with its academic calendar. The exams were conducted ahead of the onset of harsh winter conditions, which typically begin by November 1 in the region.
“The winter in the upper belt is extremely severe, making it difficult to continue academic activities beyond October,” said Pema Wangchhen Gurung, Coordinator of the Education Committee at Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality. “Therefore, the exams must be completed before November, after which schools announce a long winter vacation,” he added.
The local government had directed all schools to conduct their final examinations between mid-October and November 1.
Teachers said the exams were held even during Tihar because the academic schedule could not be postponed. “We celebrated Tihar with the students this year,” said Nabin Shahi, a teacher at Tashi Sambho Basic School in Shey Phoksundo-7. “All schools followed the local government’s directive and conducted the exams despite the festival,” he added.
Due to the significant climatic variation between the upper and lower regions, two separate academic calendars are implemented in the Dolpa district-one for the upper Himalayan settlements and another for the lower region.
