With the conclusion of the Tihar festival, preparations for Chhath Puja, the biggest festival celebrated in the Madhes region, have begun in Mahottari district.
Cultural expert Dhrub Ray said preparations have started with the cleaning of rivers, ponds, streams, and brooks at Jaleshwor Municipality–5. During the festival, devotees worship the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Mata at water bodies across the Mithila region.
For the convenience of devotees, local authorities have started repairing damaged roads and improving access to ponds and rivers, said Bijay Kumar Singh, Chairperson of Jaleshwor Municipality–8.
Mayor Suresh Sah Sonar informed that people have begun installing street lights, collecting puja materials, and setting up decorative items, including festoons and marquees, to mark the occasion.
According to Keshav Jha, coordinator of the local Chhath Puja Committee, makeshift bamboo temples and shrines are being built at Pathak Pokhari in Ward No. 8 for the rituals.
The Barun Sarobar pond has also become a major attraction for devotees, while rivers in Matihani, Gaushala, Aurahi, Alawa, and Loharpatti are witnessing large gatherings of worshippers preparing for the festival.
