The final rites of Bipin Joshi, the Nepali student who lost his life while being held hostage by the Hamas group in Gaza, were performed this morning on the banks of the Mahakali River in Kanchanpur district.
Joshi’s mortal remains were brought to his residence at Bheemdatta Municipality-3 on Monday evening from Israel, where he had been studying agriculture under the Learn and Earn Programme.
Before the cremation, a funeral procession was organized in his hometown, during which a contingent of the Armed Police Force offered a guard of honour as a mark of national respect, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Sagar Bohora of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur.
Hundreds of locals, family members, and officials from various government and security agencies gathered to pay their final tributes to Joshi. Local representatives, administrative officials, and residents lined the streets as the funeral cortege passed through the town amid a solemn atmosphere.
Joshi had been held captive by Hamas for nearly two years following the militant group’s October 7, 2023, attack in southern Israel, in which seven other Nepali students from Sudurpaschim Province also lost their lives.
His body was repatriated to Nepal through close coordination between the Nepali Embassy in Israel, the Israeli government, and Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
