The northern region of Gorkha district experienced snowfall in the first week of October - a rare occurrence typically seen during the winter season.
The Samdo area of Chumnumbri Rural Municipality–1 received snowfall on October 6, surprising both locals and visitors. Resident Nima Gyalgen Lama said that normal life was affected following the snowfall. “The snow this time is heavier than what we usually experience in winter,” Lama said, adding that the unseasonal snowfall has affected potato farming in the area.
However, he noted that the impact on crops is not severe. “The snow started melting from Tuesday afternoon after the sun appeared, so we expect to harvest our crops soon once the weather clears,” Lama shared.
Located at an altitude of 3,890 meters above sea level, Samdo village primarily produces potatoes and buckwheat, while tourism remains the main source of income for locals.
Meanwhile, the snowfall has delighted tourists, coinciding with the start of the autumn expedition season to Mt. Manaslu.
