The Khumbu region, known as the gateway to Mount Everest, witnessed unseasonal snowfall in the first week of October, disrupting daily life and local tourism activities.
Autumn typically marks the beginning of the tourist season in the Everest region, when trekkers and climbers crowd the trails from Namche Bazaar to Gokyo, Dingboche, and Phorche. However, this year, the region was unexpectedly blanketed in snow, an occurrence rarely seen so early in the season.
According to locals, heavy rainfall that began on Sunday morning turned into snow in areas above Namche, particularly across Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality. Villager Pasang Sherpa reported that persistent rain and snow have covered Dingboche, Lobuche, Pheriche, and Gokyo in white.
Laxman Adhikari, chairperson of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-4, said the snowfall led to over four feet of accumulation on rooftops in the upper Khumbu region. “The snow that fell above Namche has disrupted daily life,” Adhikari said.
The District Police Office, Solukhumbu, confirmed that five hotels in Dingboche collapsed due to the weight of the snow. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manojit Kunwar stated, “The roofs of five hotels were damaged because of heavy snowfall and continuous rain. While there have been no human casualties, the economic impact is significant.”
Locals and tourism entrepreneurs said the sudden snowfall has also affected trekking and expedition schedules, with several groups delaying their plans until weather conditions stabilize.
