The autumn climbing season on Manaslu (8,163 meters), the world’s eighth-highest peak, has begun on a highly encouraging note, drawing a record number of mountaineers and setting new milestones.
According to Himal Gautam, Director of the Department of Tourism, as of September 28, a total of 374 climbers, including 95 women and 279 men from 31 expedition groups, have received permits to attempt Manaslu. Several climbers have already reached the summit, while others are currently making their ascent.
“This is a significant increase compared to last autumn, when only 28 climbing groups obtained permits,” Director Gautam said. Leading expedition companies, including Seven Summit Treks, Satori Adventure, and Elite Expeditions, have already established their camps at the Manaslu base.
Record Royalty Collection
The department reported that favorable weather conditions have also spurred climbing on other major peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Ama Dablam, Mera Peak, and Island Peak. In total, 667 climbers-152 women and 515 men from 67 countries-have received permits to scale 36 different peaks this season, including two groups for Mt. Everest.
So far, the government has collected Rs 182.16 million in mountaineering royalties, with Rs 150 million coming from Manaslu alone. This marks the highest autumn royalty collection on record, significantly surpassing the typical Rs 70–80 million collected in past seasons.
Youngest and Oldest Records Broken
This season has also witnessed remarkable feats. Nima Chhiring Sherpa, at just 16 years, 4 months, and 18 days, set a new record as the youngest climber to summit Manaslu, reaching the top at 6:24 a.m. on September 28.
Adding to the historic season, an 86-year-old Spanish climber became the oldest to scale Manaslu, proving that age is no barrier to Himalayan adventure.
In a separate milestone, Polish ski-mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel achieved a groundbreaking feat by skiing down from the summit of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen, after making the ascent with Seven Summit Treks.
With ideal weather and a surge of climbers from around the globe, this autumn’s Himalayan season is shaping up to be one of the most successful and record-breaking in recent years.
