Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to raise the issue of the India-China agreement on the Lipulekh Pass during his official visit to China, which is scheduled from August 30 to September 3. The matter will be brought up during high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday to announce recent Cabinet decisions, Minister for Communications and Information Technology and government spokesperson, Prithvi Subba Gurung, stated that the Prime Minister will voice Nepal's concerns regarding the bilateral agreement between India and China.
"The agreement between the Foreign Ministers of India and China is against Nepal’s sovereignty. This issue will be raised in the high-level meetings during the SCO Summit," said Minister Gurung.
He also confirmed that preparations are underway for a sideline meeting between Prime Minister Oli and Indian Prime Minister Modi during the Summit.
Minister Gurung added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Nepal, has already submitted a diplomatic note objecting to the India-China agreement, which includes plans to use the Lipulekh Pass territory claimed by Nepal as a trade route.
In addition, Gurung emphasized that the government will adhere strictly to its policy of avoiding the inclusion of new large-scale projects in its programs and budget, focusing only on feasible and practical initiatives moving forward.
