Despite the presence of numerous universities and colleges offering higher education within the country, a significant amount of money continues to be spent by Nepali students on studying abroad.
According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal, released by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday, based on annual data, travel-related payments from Nepal increased by 18.1 percent to reach Rs 223.72 billion in the fiscal year 2024/25. Of this, Rs 138.48 billion was spent on education alone.
In comparison, total travel payments stood at Rs 189.43 billion in the previous fiscal year, with Rs 125.13 billion allocated for education. The central bank report also highlights that Nepal's net services income remained in deficit, widening to Rs 90.94 billion in 2024/25, up from a deficit of Rs 55.86 billion in the previous year.
Meanwhile, under the services account, travel income increased by 7.7 percent, reaching Rs 88.66 billion this year, compared to Rs 82.33 billion in the previous year.
