500-Year-Old Monastery Renovated in Mustang

Thursday, 08 May 2025

A centuries-old heritage site in the Himalayas has received a new lease of life. The 500-year-old Sauru Monastery, located in Sauru village of Thasang Rural Municipality-2, has undergone significant renovation.

The restoration was made possible through a generous donation of Rs 2.25 million by social workers Madan and Bal Kumari Gauchan of Pokhara.

Subarna Gauchan, Chairperson of the Monastery Conservation Management Committee, confirmed that both the interior and exterior of the once-dilapidated monastery have been fully repaired. The renovation project also included paving the monastery grounds with reinforced concrete (RCC), installing electrical systems, and constructing essential facilities such as toilets.

"This renovation helps preserve our cultural heritage and provides a more welcoming environment for both locals and visitors," said Subarna.
